LoRaWAN frequency in Turkey: EU868 and BTK rules

In Turkey, LoRaWAN devices use the EU868 frequency plan (863–870 MHz). The band falls under the short-range device (SRD/KET) rules in BTK's «Technical Criteria for Radio Equipment Exempt from Frequency Assignment»: devices need no frequency assignment but must respect output-power and duty-cycle limits.

LoRaWAN frequency in Turkey: EU868 and BTK rules

In short

The default EU868 LoRaWAN channels are 868.1 / 868.3 / 868.5 MHz, inside the 868–868.6 MHz sub-band that BTK's criteria limit to 25 mW e.r.p. and at most 1% duty cycle. The 869.4–869.65 MHz sub-band allows 500 mW e.r.p. and 10% duty cycle; LoRaWAN's RX2 downlink channel (869.525 MHz) sits there. US915, AU915 or AS923 devices are not suitable for Turkey.

Audience: System integrators, project and procurement teams.

How to proceed

  1. 1

    Check the frequency variant

The part number or datasheet must say EU868 (868M for some vendors). US915, AU915 and AS923 variants are not used in Turkey.

  2. 2

    Match gateway and sensors

The gateway and every end device must be EU868; devices on different frequency plans cannot talk on the same network.

  3. 3

    Plan for the duty cycle

The 1% limit in 868–868.6 MHz means about 36 seconds of airtime per device per hour. Set the reporting interval and spreading factor (via ADR) accordingly.

  4. 4

    Check conformity documents

BTK's criteria reference TS EN 300 220 for this band; the device should have a declaration of conformity.

Included

  • 868–868.6 MHz: 25 mW e.r.p., ≤1% duty cycle or LBT+AFA (default LoRaWAN channels)
  • 868.7–869.2 MHz: 25 mW e.r.p., ≤0.1% duty cycle or LBT+AFA
  • 869.4–869.65 MHz: 500 mW e.r.p., ≤10% duty cycle or LBT+AFA (RX2 channel)
  • 869.7–870 MHz: 25 mW e.r.p., ≤1% duty cycle or LBT+AFA
  • 863–870 MHz general: 25 mW e.r.p., ≤0.1% duty cycle or LBT; 1% if restricted to 865–868 MHz

Not included

  • This page is not legal advice; check BTK's current technical criteria document for the binding values.
  • 433 MHz LoRa devices and the US915/AS923 plans are out of scope.

Frequently asked questions

Which frequency does LoRaWAN use in Turkey?

LoRaWAN in Turkey uses the EU868 frequency plan (863–870 MHz). The default channels are 868.1, 868.3 and 868.5 MHz.

Do I need a BTK licence or frequency assignment for LoRaWAN?

Under BTK's technical criteria, EU868 LoRaWAN devices are short-range devices exempt from frequency assignment, provided they respect the power and duty-cycle limits. You can build a private LoRaWAN network for your own site; offering electronic communications services to third parties may require separate BTK authorisation.

Is the old KET Regulation still in force?

The Short Range Radio Devices Regulation published in Official Gazette no. 28408 on 11 September 2012 is referred to as repealed in BTK's document. The current values are in BTK's technical criteria for radio equipment exempt from frequency assignment.

What does a 1% duty cycle mean?

A device may transmit in that sub-band for at most 1% of the time, about 36 seconds per hour in total. Sensors usually send a short packet every few minutes, so this is enough in practice.

Can I use a US915 sensor in Turkey?

No. US915 devices transmit in 902–928 MHz, will not talk to EU868 gateways in Turkey, and that band is not defined for LoRaWAN in Turkey. Buy the EU868 variant.
